Why is my Google page rank 0, I have 597 external links?

I am trying to get a better understanding of SEO. I know my site is weak on content, but with 597 external links I would think I would at least get ranked?
I'm sure that many of those links aren't in highly "valuable" sites, but most are not reciprocal. Could it be my keywords?

Your site looks good. So before worrying about the rank look for the language you designed your site. If its outdated then redesign it as google wants you to do. Add relevant keywords. Search in search engines for that.

Your page rank has no relationship with the actual rankings of your website. However, if your actual rankings have dropped then obviously a drop in page rank will follow.

Make sure you are not using any controversion techniques.

The number of links could be great to determine from SEO perspectives while for improving the PR of your site, even a few high PageRank links would suffice. For example if you add a handful of homepage links to your site, coming from the sites having PR of 5,6,7 and then wait for the next update, you could get surprised by the results as a PR push and jump could be expected.

PR is very over rated these days and what really matters is the traffic your getting from the serps. If your traffic is good and you are showing up, it's time to train your clients to quite worring about the magical green bar. In fact, tell them to remove the google toolbar all together and your life will suddenly become much less stressful.
I've got sites that have 0 pr consistantly beating much higher pr sites. I don't even have the spybar installed on my main computer anymore and don't bother checking pr much at all. It's a waste of time.
